Number of images composing an animation depends of the number of pixels that can be printed behind a lens. The resolution of a print is calculed in DPI (Dot Per Inch)., resolution of a lens array is expressed in LPI (Lens Per Inch). Number of images composing the animation is given by dividing the number of DPI by the number of LPI. This is the rule working with classical cylindrical lenticular screens. For spherical lenses, working with Popims patented SphericalLenses method, number of images composing animation is generally multiplied by 1.5 or 2.
The principle
Most printers interlace their images at the screen ruling definition multiplied by 2. For example, a printer having a screening of 400 LPI will interlace at 800 LPI, leading to an animation of 8 images for a 100 LPI lenticular array.
Popims RIP interlaces the animations at the flashing resolution of the printer. As example, if the printer CTP is 4 000 DPI, we then interlace an animation composed of 40 images for a 100 LPI lenses.
Popims RIP works with cylindrical lenses as well as for spherical ones.
The advantages
As you can imagine the effects reached by printing so much more images is very important. All type of animations see their quality increase. Even a simple 2 images flip has a much better effect with an instant jump from an image to the other. The “Popims Infinity” effect (which enables the same as moiré but with animations instead of still patterns) and the 3Ds has much more depth. The animations last longer and are more fluid, less fuzzy.
Popims organization:
We begin by calibrating the software to your equipments (CTP resolution, frame angle, Dot Gain, color profile…). We then deliver 4 bitmap tiff files at the CTP definition representing the CMYK layers of the image. If specified, the image will be at the exact pitch of the lenses used and the printer will only have to print it.
Invoicing methods:
Popims RIP is proposed as a remote service: customers buy only the part of the software used to conceive and pre-view the animation, while the interlacing job is done remotely by our computer center in Paris (Internet). We also deliver very high definition flexo and offset plates.
Summary:
Using the High Definition interlacing RIP from Popims gives a much better quality to your print adding value to it and leading more and more customers to work with you.
